Holistic Rehab Treatment

You must have heard medical practitioners saying the word “holistic” in their method of treatments. It has become a buzzword nowadays for many doctors, especially those advocating a more natural treatment approach.

The word could either mean alternative or natural and is always talked about in positive terms. Somehow, when a doctor says it, we automatically think that it is better than other forms of treatments.

Holistic Rehab Treatment

A Primer on Holistic Rehab Treatment

With regards to rehab treatment, holistic carries two meanings. It refers to residential rehab programs in two distinct ways.

  • It can refer to a program of residential rehab that provides only natural or alternative treatment. This method uses non-clinical therapies.
  • More importantly, it refers to a type of rehab program that treats your whole being, not just your body but your soul or spirit as well. It is a form of comprehensive treatment that addresses the issues of your whole being.

In holistic rehab treatment, you are considered as existing on three levels

  • Body
  • Mind
  • Spirit

This form of rehab says that the problems of your body and mind are easily diagnosed, quantified and treated. But conventional medical procedures ignore the spiritual side of things.

Practitioners of holistic treatment methods believe that when the issues and needs of the spirit are ignored and its influence in your body and mind are not considered, any kind of treatment will not produce long term results.

Why Holistic Rehab Treatment Should Be Considered

There is no single form of rehab therapy that works effectively for all people who are recovering from drug and alcohol abuse, or mental problems. Holistic rehab, being more comprehensive in its characteristics, could be the answer to those who are experiencing difficult recoveries.

This alternative form of therapy is found to be effective because it combines the best treatment methodologies in conventional rehab centers (which treat drug addiction and substance abuse and target the mind and body) with that of alternative therapies known to benefit the spirit.

Fundamental Approach of Holistic Rehab Programs

There are two steps being undertaken by rehab centers that offer holistic rehab treatment.

The first step is to treat the physical aspect of the problem.
Since prolonged intake of dangerous drugs eventually leaves toxins inside the body, they make the patient more addicted to the drugs.

To address the problem, the patient is first asked to undergo detox to get the toxins out of the body and alleviate withdrawal symptoms. Her House follows this with exercise programs including outdoor excursions and yoga. We also have an on-site nutritionist and chefs to help plan a nutritious, rebuilding diet.

With a healthy body, the patient has greater chances of recovery. Proper nutrition provides the substances that contribute to the process of healing while the addict is abstaining from dangerous drugs.

Some of the physical activities she may be asked to perform may include:

  • Routine exercise
  • Hiking
  • Yoga

With daily exercise, the patient will be used to a routine. It will also strengthen her body and relieve her anxiety and stress.

After some time, the patient learns to cope without using the drugs and will begin to function normally.

The second step is to treat her spirit. She will be taught through therapies or one-on-one counseling, or group activities and interact with fellow patients in group therapies.

Some of the therapies included in treating her soul may include:

  • Counseling
  • Christian therapy
  • Outdoor therapy
  • Guided meditation

Success of Holistic Rehab Therapy

Due to the success of the holistic form of drug addiction treatment, many centers are now incorporating it as part of their inpatient and outpatient therapies.

It doesn’t contradict the conventional mode of treatments but it complements them effectively. Holistic rehab is perfectly compatible with all the standard methods of treating drug addiction. For instance, cognitive behavioral therapy goes well with the yoga and meditation sessions in teaching the recovering addict how to manage and control stress effectively.

If this alternative form of treatment is combined with the detox programs of rehab centers, it is found to help successfully treat all severity levels of drug addiction.
