As a survivor of trauma, each day can be full of challenges. Feelings of anger, sorrow and even guilt can cloud your mind and make it hard to go on. While all of these feelings are perfectly normal, it is important to reach out to others who can help you begin to pick up the pieces. While you may not be able to erase what happened, you can find healing and strength that deepens your self-understanding.

Practice Self-Acceptance

Women survivors of assault often replay the event over in their mind and wonder what they could have done differently. Unfortunately, this just further allows the trauma to continue to inflict pain on your heart. Instead of focusing on the event, try to look inward and accept that it has changed who you are today. While the trauma may hurt, it has helped you become more resilient, compassionate and strong. Focusing on providing yourself with positive affirmations can erase some of the negative emotions you may feel.

Address Related Issues

It is very common for survivors of trauma to develop addictions as an attempt to drown out their emotions. If you struggle with drugs or alcohol, it is important to know that you are not alone. Many people enter treatment programs with underlying issues such as addiction caused by trauma in their past, and counselors are full of strategies that can help you learn how to heal.
