If you are dealing with a drug or alcohol addiction, you should seek help as soon as possible. This is true whether or not you still live what you would consider to be a normal life. While you may be able to function properly now, that may not always be the case if you remain dependent on a one or more substances.

Functionality Doesn’t Mean Damage Isn’t Being Done

Just because you may be a functional alcoholic doesn’t mean that your body won’t feel the effects of alcohol. You may still suffer from liver damage, neuropathy and an inability to function when you don’t have alcohol close by. If you are addicted to a drug or prescription medication, you could suffer damage to internal organs or to your nervous system regardless of how it makes you feel.

You Never Know When You Could Hit a Tipping Point

Yes, you may be able to enjoy a few drinks before work and still get through your day without suffering a lack of performance. However, the cumulative effects of drinking day after day for weeks, months or years will start to wear you down. The same is true of prolonged drug use. At some point, you won’t be able to get through the day without others noticing that you are drunk or high, which could lead to job loss or legal issues.

You Are More Likely to Complete Rehab

Because you are still going to work or otherwise functioning on a daily basis, you have the motivation to tend to things that are important to you. This means that you are probably motivated and determined enough to get through rehab and get your life back on track. If you can accomplish your goals while dependent on drugs or alcohol, imagine what you can accomplish without drugs or alcohol taking up your time and money.

Whether you are functioning or not, it is in your best interest to seek help for addiction. While in rehab, you can talk to professionals and get to the root of your problem, which could help you overcome your addiction and start to rebuild your life.
